Condolences to:

Thanks, Neighbor!

From a neighbor on Dublin Drive:

At least 9 lucky and grateful neighbors of Mary Hook on Dublin Drive are still so thankful to Mary for plowing all of us out of the ‘big snow.’ What a tremendous job. All year long Mary does helpful and thoughtful things for her neighbors. Our heartfelt thanks.”

From Julie Munschauer of Westbury Road:

I want to thank my thoughtful and generous neighbors who took care of me during our 3-snow storm winter: Jennifer Kinard and Beth and Steve George who by hand and snow blower cleared my sidewalk 3 times and Bill Delauder and his brother-in-law who plowed out my car and cleared the street in front of my house. Also, Sharon Delauder and Jennifer Kinard offered shopping trips which were much appreciated- my secret Santas. Thanks guys and gals.”

If you know of a community resident who has been especially neighborly, let us know so we can acknowledge it in future newsletters.

Picnic

Please mark your calendar for September 11 (rain date September 12) for the annual Orchard Hills Community Association picnic. See the flyer for details.

Rats

Due to the Charles Street construction, there have been reports of rats in the neighborhood. Residents may call in complaints or request information using the Rid Rat telephone number, 410-887-RATS, or they may fill out the online complaint form at http://www.baltimorecountymd.gov/Agencies/permits/ridrats/ratcomplaints.html.

Cats

There have been several new complaints about cats roaming the neighborhood. Baltimore County code requires all dogs and cats to be leashed when off the owner’s property. Owners may be fined for allowing pets to roam. Residents with concerns about unleashed dogs or cats should call Baltimore County Animal Control at 410-887-5961. In addition, many home centers sell cat and dog repellants that can be applied to planting beds.

One Warm Coat

Karen Marcellino of 36 Othoridge Road is starting an ongoing community project under the name of “One Warm Coat.” She is collecting gently worn coats for children and adults. All donations will be cleaned, mended and given away to local shelters in need. Karen will have a large donation bin labeled “One Warm Coat” in her driveway to drop off coats all year long. For more information, call Karen at 410-821-7234. Please remember to call or drop off coats when cleaning out your coat closet.

Recycling

We have been asked to remind residents not to put their recycling materials in plastic bags. Recyclables may be mixed together and set out for recycling collection in a variety of containers, including:

Paper and cardboard may also be tied in bundles with non-plastic string or placed in paper bags for collection. Containers are limited to a maximum filled weight of 40 pounds. Boxes, bags, and bundles are limited to a maximum filled weight of 30 pounds.

If the container has a lid, the lid must not be fastened to the container with rope, wire, chains, etc.

Containers with hinged lids and/or wheels are not recommended. Also, the County’s web site, http://www.baltimorecountymd.gov/Agencies/publicworks/recycling/singlestream/collectioninformation.html lists the following items that are acceptable for recycling:

Note: laundry baskets, garbage containers and recycling containers will be collected for recycling IF a note requesting this is prominently attached.

Farmers’ Market

More than 20 Baltimore County farmers have joined together to form a new Farmers’ market at the Maryland State Fairgrounds. The market takes place on Wednesdays from 2p.m. to 6p.m.

From the Baltimore County Police

Once again Precinct 7 officers are responding to an increase in calls regarding door-to-door solicitors. As in the past, we are finding that some of these solicitors are licensed and legitimate and some are not.

Some of the solicitors will actually tell you that they are neighbors of yours (they aren't) who live "right around the corner" (they don't) and may mention the names of other neighbors (easily available in many computer databases including Maryland Real property Search) in an effort to gain your confidence. The intent of this message is NOT to suggest that all door-to-door solicitors are fraudulent or are there to scam you for money. However, please be cautious and check into the veracity of the solicitor's claims as to where the money is going. If you're not sure, or you just don't feel "right" about it, check into the background of the supposed company before making any financial donation.

Also, be aware of the following:

  1. Solicitors in Baltimore County are required to be licensed as a peddler/huckster through the Baltimore County Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court.

  2. Solicitors must carry that license with them.

  3. The license does not give the solicitor the right to remain on your property after being told to leave.

We strongly suggest to area residents NOT to allow any door-to-door solicitors into your home. If you allow the person to give the sales pitch, listen to it through the door. ASK to see their Baltimore County Huckster's License that they are required to carry. If the person makes you feel uncomfortable, simply tell the person to leave your premises and not return. Remember...it's YOUR home and you are NOT required to allow them entry and you are NOT required to listen to a sales pitch. If you don't want them there, tell them to leave. If they refuse, call 911.
