From The President

Is winter finally behind us? Well, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring and I believe that we will have just that.

I have served as president of Orchard Hills Community Association for the past two years. It has been a great experience. I would like to thank all of the board members that have helped with all of our wonderful activities these past two years.

March 22 is our annual General Meeting where a new president will take over. Baltimore County Councilman Todd Huff will speak at this meeting. I hope to see many Orchard Hills neighbors at the meeting. Look for the flyer for more details.

Please also see the flyer for the March Food Drive. We will be collecting food for the Assistance Center of Towson Churches food pantry. The food drive takes place March 12 – 19.

April will bring our annual Easter Egg Hunt at the park. Watch for that flyer next month.

In Need of Yarn

I am a volunteer knitter, volunteering for Ronald McDonald House making newborn, baby and children's hats. In need of donation of yarn (any color, no wool). Can be dropped off at 1306 Warwick Dr. Thank you, Sigrid Szoke.

Thanks, Neighbor!

If you know of a community resident who has been especially neighborly, let us know so we can acknowledge it in future newsletters.

Karen's Coat Closet

We are a large community and a giving one I know.

Karen's Coat Closet is in great need of gently worn children's coats.  To date, I have donated over 100 coats in two months. I am so grateful to all in the community have donated but am asking you to please keep me in mind when cleaning out your closets.

Did you know there are many children in our area schools who don't have
winter coats to wear?  Many children get off the bus in the morning with no coat.  I have given many coats to these schools but there is still a great need. Recently, I received calls from 7 school in just one day.

All I ask is to just think about Karen's Coat Closet the next time you hear someone say they are passing on coats.  There is always someone who needs them who does not have as much as we do. The donation bin is in front of our house (36 Othoridge Rd.) with a new sign.

Thank you so much,

Karen Marcellino 443-271-3942

Maryland Fire Museum Happenings

34th Annual Steam Show

Come cool off at the hottest place in town! On Saturday, May 7th, 2011 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., the Fire Museum of Maryland will host its 34rd Annual Steam Show. The Show features Dalmatians and draft horses, demonstrations of late-1800s horse-drawn fire engines, and rides in an 1899 hose wagon.

Join us for a day full of fun as 65-foot water towers shoot water up to 600 feet! The Steam Show will feature steam engine demonstrations, horse drawn fire equipment and carriages as well as contests for the kids. A 1989 water tower will flow water, and antique engines and vehicles will fill the parking lot. Children and adults can run under the cascades of water, learn about the history of the fire service and see how fire engines operated in the late 1800s. Come inside the Museum and see 40 antique fire engines, walk through the new 1871 Fire House Exhibit and hear the Baltimore City Alarm Office tap out fire emergency calls.

The Ahrens-Fox Day Experience the beauty and mechanical genius of the Ahrens-Fox, the “Rolls-Royce of Fire Engines!” See  these magnificent antique fire engines during the Ahrens-Fox Day at the Fire Museum of Maryland,  May 21st, 2011, 10am- 3pm. Join in the celebration of its innovative design, making it one of fire fighting’s most unique engines.

The display of up to 30 engines is provided by collectors from all over the country and will take place from 10-3 pm with a parade through Towson and Lutherville at 12 pm.  The Fire Museum of Maryland will be open to the public, 10 – 4 pm and food vendors will be on site. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for firefighters and seniors, $5 for children ages 2 to 18, and children 2 and under are free. Tickets are available for advance purchase only.

The Ahrens-Fox Company has a long tradition in manufacturing quality fire fighting apparatuses, particularly the Ahrens-Fox engine with its distinctive, front-mounted piston pump. Both earned a reputation for efficiency and durability.
