Subject: Homestead Tax Credit

In 2007, the legislature passed House Bill 436 regarding the Homestead Tax Credit. This legislation requires homeowners to file an application with the State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) in order to qualify for the Homestead Tax Credit for a person’s primary residence. We wanted to avoid people abusing the system by allowing this to be automatic. While the legislation became effective July 1, 2007 there is an application deadline of December 31, 2012 for homeowners to apply for the credit.

Today, SDAT advised that only 900,000 applications have been filed although as many as 1.3 Million households may qualify. To apply for the Homestead Tax Credit or to verify if you have already applied, please go to the SDAT website to obtain detailed information on this program. This is http://www.dat.state.md.us/sdatweb/homestead.html
I urge you to apply or to, at least, determine whether you are eligible. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Steve
