Subject: June 29th Storm - Power Outages in Maryland

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

With the end of the massive heat wave and dramatic power outage that struck Maryland, I wanted to thank all of you who have shared your personal experiences and offered ideas for better ensuring that we do not face similar problems with electric power in the future. I hope you did not sustain permanent damage.

I also want to thank and send kudos to all of you who helped out neighbors, housed friends and went out of your way to provide assistance to those who were without electricity, whether it was for a day or eight days. I also want to thank the thousands of workers who were in the field, sweltering in the heat to repair power lines and to remove the trees and limbs that crashed onto the lines and transformers. I had the chance to talk with crews from Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Texas and Florida. Their professionalism and commitment to helping us was very impressive.

It is now important to look to the future. The Public Service Commission has opened Case No. 9298 as a result of the June 29 storm.
It has scheduled two public hearings for September 13 and 14 at 10 a.m. at their office at 6 St. Paul Street in Baltimore. The PSC also plans to hold eight (8) community meetings around the state to get added public comment. You can also file a formal complaint by phone at 410-767-8028 or by email or mail to David Collins, Executive Secretary, Public Service Commission, 6 St. Paul Street, 16th Floor, Baltimore 21202.

I have concerns that I expect BGE and the PSC to address. These include how to vastly improve the communications to people about the work to be done and the timing to restore power, ensuring the most vulnerable receive power as quickly as possible, the plans to increase reliability in the various neighborhoods and, the costs and benefits of actions such as undergrounding the utilities and more aggressive tree trimming. As one constituent said, we are more and more dependent upon electricity for our daily lives so, how do we improve its deliverability?

Please let me know if you have other suggestions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Steve
