When I speak with students about government and democracy, as I recently did at
Stoneleigh Elementary and Carver High School, I mention the value and importance
of volunteering and giving to others. I tell them this because democracy
involves participation in the community around us. Government is a collective
effort so engagement in our own communities is as important as the work of
legislators.
As we approach this holiday season, it is a time to reflect on the good works
that have been done and also to look at the many needs that remain around us.
So, while you prepare for your family and friends, please consider providing
support to those in our community who are struggling and less well off.
We are fortunate to have many great organizations in our area where you can
contribute money, goods and time. If you have not already, I urge everyone to
make such contributions part of their Holiday giving. Let me mention just a few
you may want to consider:
* Assistance Center of Towson Churches, 120 W. Pennsylvania Ave in Towson
(410-296-4855) accepts food, personal items and gift cards to provide assistance
to low income families and the homeless.
* Maryland Food Bank (410-737-8282) provides food for pantries and kitchens
throughout Maryland.. It is looking for financial donations to purchase food.
* Victor’s Vittles Food Pantry (410-668-8089) accepts nonperishable food and
personal need items for distribution to people in need in zip codes 21234, 21236
and 21286.
* House of Ruth Maryland (410-889-0840) welcomes gift certificates and adult,
infant and toddler sleepwear as part of its services to victims of domestic
violence and their families.
* Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland (443-573-0940) is looking for volunteers
to provide nutritious meals for homebound individuals and pet food donations for
clients who have pets.
* My Sister’s Place Woman’s Center (410-659-3763) welcomes sweaters, long sleeve
shirts and other clothing as well as personal care items and financial
contributions to help homeless and impoverished women and their children achieve
self-sufficiency.
* Community Assistance Network (410-339-6457) is looking for financial support
for its efforts to reduce vulnerability and promotes self-sufficiency of low
income people in Baltimore County.
Thank you and my best wishes to you and your family during the holidays and
throughout the New Year.
